If you’re eyeing a fresh look for your space—without the mess or commitment—peel and stick wallpaper might seem like a dream come true. And in many ways, it is. But before you fill your cart with rolls of trendy patterns, there are a few things you should know. I am not getting paid to write this (I wish ahaha) so know these are my thoughts and feelings on the subject.

At Wall Whimsy Co., we specialize in wallpaper installations across Covington, LA and the Greater New Orleans area, and we’ve seen it all—DIY wins and peel-and-stick fails. Here’s our guide to the pros and cons of peel and stick wallpaper, plus tips for getting the most from this popular product.

🛠️ What Is Peel and Stick Wallpaper?

Peel and stick (also called removable or self-adhesive wallpaper) is a vinyl-based product with a built-in adhesive backing. No paste, water, or tools are needed—just peel the backing off and apply it directly to the wall.

It’s marketed as a DIY-friendly, temporary alternative to traditional wallpaper, but it’s not always as easy as it sounds. BEWARE. If you have ever had the misfortune of working with a cheap peel and stick paper is it like working with a giant sticker from hell. NOT ALL ARE CREATED EQUALLY.

✅ Pros of Peel and Stick Wallpaper

✔️ Easy to Apply (…Kind Of)

You don’t need wallpaper paste, water trays, or fancy tools. It’s ideal for quick makeovers, small spaces, or temporary rentals.

✔️ Temporary & Removable

Perfect for renters or those who love to switch up styles often. It peels off without leaving residue—most of the time.

✔️ Budget-Friendly

Peel and stick wallpaper is usually more affordable than traditional wallpaper, especially when you skip professional installation. (it is all fun and games till someone rage quits)

✔️ Endless Style Options

From trendy florals to faux wood, marble, or grasscloth patterns, peel-and-stick options are everywhere. BUT CAUTION- peel and stick paper only works when it is thin enough for it to stick to the wall and hold. Textured paper is usually heavy and will be prone to peeling. it also most likely will not be real grasscloth only the look of it- like an image with no texture.

⚠️ Cons of Peel and Stick Wallpaper

✖️ Not As Easy As It Looks

Applying peel and stick wallpaper without bubbles or crooked seams can be tricky—especially on textured walls or in large areas. It takes TIME as you must be extra careful not to let the paper stick to itself in the installation process.

✖️ Doesn’t Stick to Every Surface

Peel and stick wallpaper often struggles on textured walls, matte paint, or humid areas (like bathrooms). It may peel prematurely. Areas such as laundry rooms, bathrooms and kitchens could cause the paste in the paper to reactivate and slide off the walls!

✖️ Limited Longevity

It’s designed to be temporary. Over time, edges may curl, and corners can lift—especially in high-traffic or high-moisture spaces. upkeep may be required with some additional paste around the edges.

✖️ Cheaper Doesn’t Always Mean Better

Lower-quality peel and stick wallpaper can stretch, tear, or lose adhesion. We've been called in many times to redo failed DIY jobs.

🧠 Pro Tips from Wall Whimsy Co.

Want to make the most of peel and stick wallpaper? Here’s what we recommend:
  • Test a Sample First: Try a small section before committing to an entire wall. See how it sticks to your surface over a few days.

  • Prep the Surface: Clean walls thoroughly—dust, grease, and texture can affect adhesion.

  • Measure Twice, Cut Once: Precision is key. Misaligned patterns or gaps will show quickly with peel and stick.

  • Hire a Pro (Yes, Even for Peel and Stick): For large areas or tricky spaces (like around windows, outlets, or corners), professional installation can save you time, frustration, and wasted materials.

🏡 When to Use Peel and Stick Wallpaper

  • Rental apartments or dorm rooms

  • Kid’s rooms (where design tastes change often)

  • Powder rooms (only if humidity is low)

  • Feature walls in home offices or craft rooms

  • Backing for bookshelves or cabinets
